Prevue Guide and sports overflows?

Post by JoeTheDragon »

Preview Guide and sports overflows?? why was Prevue Guide used over useing a PEG channle for the part time over flows? The guide shows some odd stuff with this shearing.

also look at the videos
sports channel Chicago shown as spoc is list on 39 that is also the guide but 54 is missing.

sports channel Chicago shown as spoc is list on 39 with the guide on 39 as well with 54 being sports channel Chicago shown as spoc (lake forest) Not in guide is the part time PPV (game only?) Hawkvision that was run by sports channel Chicago. Was that on the ppv channel? or sports channel main or overflow?

I may have a few answers to these questions. First of all, the use of Prevue Guide for Sports overflow feeds. In some areas and districts, cable companies are forced to have a local access channel / PEG channel as part of their agreement to the county/parish/city that they service. In those agreements, the cable company may breach agreement with the municipality they serve if they override the PEG programming with sports. Logically, since they don't have to have a cable guide, this would be the next channel to use.

To the second question regarding the missing Channel 54 on that Prevue Guide's list from Lake Forest... SportsChannel Chicago, like the other Liberty Media owned stations at the time, did not transmit a full 24 hour day. If you do some research online, you will find that SportsChannel ran an electronic sports news service called Sports Plus. This was shown from the time the channel ended the broadcast day (usually 3 am) to around 5 - 6 pm at night, at which time SportsChannel's programming would begin. On Prevue Guide, if a channel was off-air during those hours, they would be dropped from the listings and the channel would skip over to the next channel that had programming. We used to have a similar situation with the SportSouth channel that used to air here before Turner sold it to Fox. They used to start their broadcast day at 4 ET with the slate of the programs airing that day and programming usually began at 5 pm on weekdays and 12 noon on Saturdays and Sundays. The first half of the day was the Travel Channel / Ha! cable network / or I have seen on one occasion WWOR in New York (Love Boat was playing on that day and was by accident by our cable provider). 8-)

The last question was regarding the Lake Forest channel numbers being different than the rest of the lineup. Apparently, this Prevue Guide A2000 system was probably used in a multi-headend. So, the city of Lake Forest would see a different lineup versus the rest of Lake County, IL. In order not to have two different Prevue Guides running concurrently (rack space at US Cable's headend could have played a role in this), they decided to take a cheaper alternative to include channels in both locations in the same guide. Since it was hard to program these systems and Prevue probably charged the cable companies for use of their equipment, it was probably a no-brainer for US Cable.
